Today.
August 3.
A day we will never forget.
Today is the 11th anniversary of the genocide against the Yezidi. One of the darkest periods of our lives began on August 3, 2014. The self proclaimed ISIS attacked the Shingal region and commited atrocities that continue to have an effect even today. Thousands of people were killed. Women and children were displaced. Tens of thousands of people fled.
11 years later: Still, countless families live in refugee camps - without possibilities, without safetey and without the option of returning.
Today, our team visited the Shingal region. A moving ceremony was held in honour and remembrance of the deceased and the missing people that still have not been found. We talked to teens: What does Shingal need? What do you need?
The answer was clear: Safety. Hope. Education.
Education is the key: We fight for it every single day, so that children who had to flee from ISIS don't just survive, but have a future. Our school is a place of hope for these children. Only through education can Shingal be reborn.
We do not forget.
We do not give up.
