Harman

Harman House

“Harman” means in Kurdish: “That which remains.”

01

A home in Northern Iraq

In 2015 and 2016 we were repeatedly confronted with hardship cases in our work that made it clear that our existing aid options were not enough. Many of those in need were orphans who had been freed from ISIS captivity.

From autumn 2016 onwards, Our Bridge developed a sheltered home for orphans and widows including medical and trauma-therapeutic care. The facility was built on a hill near the UN refugee camp Khanke.

„The house was named Harman — as a promise: We stay. We will never leave you alone.“

On 26 August 2017 the orphanage opened with 24 children (ages 4–15) and five widows. The infrastructure includes eight bedrooms, classrooms, playrooms, bathrooms and a dining hall. A team of twelve staff led by Kheri Mohnds provides the care.

Everyday life

01

Kitchen & meals

Wholesome nutrition supports the education programme: breakfast and lunch for all participating children, plus dinner for orphanage residents.

02

Physical health

The day begins with supervised showering, hair care and dental hygiene — essential in refugee camps.

03

Free time

After classes, two to three hours of free play follow, with basketball, football and dancing. Weekend trips such as bike tours and picnics at Mosul Lake round off the programme.
